The industrial progress of a country depends on its committed labour force. In this regard, the importance of labour welfare was recognized as early as 1931 when the Royal Commission on Labour stated that the benefits which undergo this nomenclature are of great importance to the worker who is unable to secure by themselves. The schemes of labour welfare may be regarded as a wise investment that usually brings a profitable return in the form of greater efficiency. Employee welfare means “the efforts to make life worth living for workmen.” According to Todd “Employee welfare means anything done for the comfort and improvement, intellectual or social, of the employees over and above the wages paid which is not a necessity of the industry.”

Employees are one of the most valuable resources for the company, thus it's critical to protect their physical and mental health. The company must consider its people as an investment rather than an expense to achieve this. This is crucial since employee productivity directly affects how profitable an organization is.

Employee productivity is influenced by the work environment and employee welfare initiatives implemented by the organization. The major goal of implementing employee welfare programs is to win and maintain the respect and loyalty of the workforce as a whole.

Employee productivity is influenced by the workplace environment, so it is crucial to protect their safety in order to guarantee these things. However, this poses a significant challenge for the organization, particularly when employees' job descriptions include working in dangerous conditions. An organization that disregards the safety of its employees may have to deal with a number of consequences, including resistance from labor unions or even legal action.

Therefore, it is crucial to ensure the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of employees in order to develop a motivated and devoted workforce that gives their all to achieving the objectives of the company.

Objectives of employee welfare

The interests of the employee, the business, and society at large all revolve around employee well-being.

The goal of labor/employee welfare work is to provide the services and amenities needed for the employees of the factories and industries to do their jobs in a healthy and favorable environment.

An environment that promotes morale and excellent health.

It is partially humanistic since it gives the employees the opportunity to live fuller, richer lives.

It has certain economic benefits because it increases worker productivity and keeps him happy and content. As a result, it downplays the willingness of the workforce to organize unions and use strikes.

The goal is partially civic in nature because it instills in the workforce a sense of accountability and respect for others, making them good representatives of the country.
